Topics may include communication, closeness, trust, different needs and changes affecting the relationship. Each person may have different expectations. It can help to explain why you are seeking support and what you want to discuss together, without first agreeing on one account of events.

Professional background: Psychologist, psychotraumatologist.

I draw on the psychodynamic approach. I devote the first three appointments to understanding your situation and history, adapting the pace and tools to the nature of the crisis.

The first appointment is a calm conversation. No preparation is needed, and you set the pace.

Agreeing the focus and format

The first conversation is an opportunity to learn about the approach and contact arrangements. Ask about both partners’ participation, confidentiality and possible further appointments. The scope of couples consultation and psychological support depends on your needs and the practitioner’s professional preparation; check the description of the service you choose.

Before choosing a time

Select a service intended for couples rather than assuming another person can join an individual appointment. You can each prepare questions or examples. If meeting together raises concerns about safety or being able to speak freely, mention this when discussing the appropriate form of support.
